Putting Art into Action - 12/9/2007

by Eric Stern

Pencils fly at the paper. Brushes carress the canvas. It may sound like a elementary school art class, but it's really just a J-SITE course for middle and high school students.

This is then second year that Putting Art into Action is offered here at J-SITE. This class, taught by Linda Katz, provides opportunities for students to learn about Jewish values in a free and convivial atmosphere. The teens in this this class paint murals with joyous and cheery themes. This murals will then be given to such worthy recipiants as the Children's Hospital, Charles Morris, and the Weinberg Terrace. In the words of one student, Rebecca Greenhouse, 14, "This mural will light up a child's day."

The students in this class entusiastically go about their work while talking amongst themselves. Occassionally, the conversation turns to Jewish morals, but is usually just good-natured fun. Scott Stern, 14, another teen here, successfully sums up this course in his own words. "The smallest action can sometimes make the largest difference!"
